The Albanese government is determined to act on the rising levels of plastics in the ocean, according to Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek. “If we don’t do something much better on ocean plastics by 2050 – plastics in our ocean will weigh more than fish,” Ms Plibersek said during parliamentary Question Time on Thursday.

“If we don’t do something much better on ocean plastics by 2050 – plastics in our ocean will weigh more than fish,” Ms Plibersek said during parliamentary Question Time on Thursday. “By stronger systems reducing the use of plastic, increasing recycling opportunities and of course by getting existing plastics out of our ocean.”
According to the minister, the use of plastics in Australia has nearly doubled between 2010 and 2021. “By reforming packaging regulation, we will be able to reduce the use of plastic in the first place.”
