The six-month-old female platypus is the first-known animal of its kind to be born in Australia's oldest national park in more than 50 years, and its arrival comes despite a series of recent pollution scares in local waterways.

Scientists re-homing a group of platypuses in the Royal National Park, south of Sydney, have located a new six-month-old baby platypus.

The 850-gram female puggle, as baby platypuses are known, was discovered in the Hacking River in the Royal National Park south of Sydney. "It's really looking for a needle in a haystack — it's a big system. There are only 10 animals," he said.Dr Bino is awaiting the results of a biopsy to confirm the puggle's lineage, but is confident it is a descendent of the translocated platypuses.

The changes are the biggest amendment to environment protection laws and will see the doubling of maximum penalties to millions of dollars for top-tier serious offences. But Dr Bino said water discolouration and turbidity had improved. Mr Riach, a member of the Sutherland Environment Centre, said he believed not enough protective action had been taken against Metropolitan Colliery."Picking feels like a horrible, congealed custard — it took me about a week to get the stuff out from under my nails.
