AFL: 360 co-host Mark Robinson believes the league should look into slowing the game down and reducing quarter lengths due to the growing injury toll across the AFL.

When the AFL introduced shorter quarters during the COVID-riddled 2020 season, Geelong champion Tom Hawkins said the Cats altered the way they trained to maximise their power during matches.

“I actually thought the games were too short, that the quarters were too short in terms of the actual game length,” Hawkins told foxsports.com.au. Playing time per quarter sits at 20 minutes plus time on, but for a range of reasons the actual length between the opening bounce and final siren can extend well beyond two hours., the footprint of a match can extend too long.

“Perhaps it is shorter breaks between quarters. Half-time goes so quickly as a player, but I wonder when you watch, does that go for too long for fans? There must be some things that can be tightened.” Former Hawthorn and Carlton player Daniel Harford, who also coached the Blues AFLW team, believes quarters will be reduced but is concerned about the potential impact of cutting dead time in matches.
