The Defence Minister has slammed Peter Dutton after the Opposition Leader suggested days earlier that the Albanese Government was 'preparing the ground' to dump the AUKUS nuclear power submarine program.

Richard Marles has accused Opposition Leader Peter Dutton of"playing politics" after he suggested the Defence Minister would dump the nuclear submarine program.

“And I think he’s preparing the ground to walk away from the nuclear submarine program which I think would be a travesty.” Mr Marles hit back at the suggestions from his predecessor when he appeared on Sky News Australia on Friday morning. The Defence Minister then lashed the former government again for playing politics, the infamous scrapping of the French submarine deal and the failure to secure the Japanese Soryu class diesel boats in 2014.

Mr Marles said his predecessor was"playing politics" and declared he was"completely supportive" of AUKUS and the nuclear submarine program that will see Australia acquire at least eight boats around 2038. Picture: Getty
