Brisbane’s reputation as the skin cancer capital of the world is being shaken by a Brisbane City Council pledge to cover the remaining 150 Brisbane playgrounds with cloth or trees within three years.
Brisbane’s reputation as the skin cancer capital of the world is being shaken by a lifesaving Brisbane City Council push to provide shade cover over every Brisbane playground within three years to protect children from sunburn.Under a $10 million package in this month’s Brisbane City Council budget council work crews will accelerate building shade cover over playgrounds from 10 each year to 50 each year, lord mayor Adrian Schrinner said.
“Queensland also remains the skin cancer capital of Australia with more than 3600 people diagnosed with melanoma each year, so it’s vital we’re sun safe, no matter our age,” he said. While some Brisbane parks and playgrounds have good shade cover from mature trees, there are about 150 parks still in need of adequate shade cover.“It will help protect children from sunburn and potentially from skin cancers later in life,” Farrell said.
