Anthony Albanese’s olive branch to business has been rejected by the mining sector.

Anthony Albanese’s olive branch to business has been rejected, with mining companies labelling the government’sas “some of the most extreme interventionist workplace changes that have ever been proposed in Australia”.

“This has been the focus of our constructive engagement on industrial relations reform, on overdue changes to the migration system and boosting skills. “As demand for minerals and metals intensifies, our global competitors are responding rapidly, incentivising development, attracting investment, encouraging growth, and they are stealing a march,” she told the dinner.

“Let’s not sugarcoat it. These industrial relations changes are some of the most extreme interventionist workplace changes that have ever been proposed in Australia.”The minerals sector is most upset about the provisions that seek to stamp out labour hire. Even those supposedly exempt, such as service contractors, will have to satisfy a multifactor test to secure that exemption.

Mr Albanese preferred to stay upbeat, saying Australia would be a reliable supplier of critical minerals, as it has been for coal and gas.
