Anthony Albanese said he would be surprised if some of the nation’s biggest Indigenous athletes do not come out in support of the Voice to Parliament ahead of the referendum.
According to the Daily Telegraph, the government is hopeful of recruiting the likes of Adam Goodes, Cathy Freeman and Patty Mills to champion the Yes case. With the referendum likely to be held between October and December of this year, Mr Albanese says he’s received positive feedback from all the sporting codes he has spoken with.
“They’ve all been very supportive of Indigenous recognition for a long period of time,” he told Sky News Australia on Sunday. The Prime Minister added that he would be “surprised” if a range of public figures do not come out in support of the referendum. “And I expect that not just them but Tennis Australia have been supportive. Cricket Australia, all of the sporting codes.”
