The Prime Minister will today announce the biggest expansion of the defence force since the Vietnam war. JessMillward9 9News MORE:

will recommend a National Emergency Declaration be made for flood-hit communities in a bid to open up more funding for the area.

The money will be automatically paid for those who have already claimed and received the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment, at the current rate of $1000 per adult and $400 per child.

A state of national emergency would allow support and relief funds to be delivered more swiftly to flood-ravaged communities such as Lismore. Defence personnel are on the ground in both south-east Queensland and northern NSW to help with the recovery efforts. "We do have to make sure that we have got the right needs identified and supported from the locals, that we are framing that up and getting the supports, that we have got to have the mechanisms in place," he told Today.
