The Prime Minister has promised Adelaide and Western Australia will be the big beneficiaries of an announcement on Australia's nuclear submarines set to be unveiled in the United States.

Anthony Albanese took questions on the submarines Australia will acquire through the AUKUS trilateral security partnership just before departing New Delhi on Saturday to fly to the United States.

"And Adelaide in particular will be a big beneficiary of this announcement, as well as Western Australia. Australia will splash billions of dollars on the submarines amid Mr Albanese's commitment to ensure defence spending is at least two per cent of GDP.

"Australia faces real challenges. We have said very clearly and explicitly that there are major pressures on expenditure, not just in defence but in other areas as well."
