The referendum won't be the “unifying moment for the nation” the Prime Minister predicted in his Garma speech last year, and he only has himself to blame, writes Nick Cater.

For the last 12 months, he has failed to make a single persuasive argument in favour of voting yes but given us a truckload of reasons to vote no.So too is his inability to handle pressure in public, a weakness that will cause him to lose the referendum and, ultimately, the prime ministership.Albanese: “Can I make this point - because I know where you are reading from. A simple proposal to reference Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the constitution would almost certainly have succeeded had Albanese approached it with the spirit of humility he promised.He is responsible for chaining recognition to the Voice - an amorphous, half-formed idea, the purpose of which he has been unable to explain.
