One of the fundamental differences between the Liberal Party and Labor Party is Liberals believe in equality of opportunity and Labor believe in equality of outcome.

An excellent example of Labor’s attempts to achieve equality of outcome is currently on display thanks to the Minister for Industry and Science, the Hon Ed Husic MP’s, ‘Diversity in STEM Review’, which this week released its draft recommendations.

According to the draft recommendations, “improving diversity and inclusion in STEM means tackling power structures, culture and unconscious bias” to “increase access and belonging”. In this instance it seems experience and rigorous scientific, engineering and submariner skills should have been prioritised over “other” attributes, including diversity, because when you are at the bottom of the ocean you realise that science is actually “our most valuable, or best, knowledge system”.

Government could do so by working with businesses to incentivise brilliant science and maths students with scholarships, employment and wages regardless of whether they are male, female, gay, straight, disabled, able, young or not-so-young.
