Tasmania looks set to finally get its own AFL team as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is expected to announce a significant investment into the Macquarie Point redevelopment.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce the significant injection of funding towards the construction of a $715 million stadium precinct at Macquarie Point when he travels to Hobart this weekend.

Premier Jeremy Rockliff's government will also contribute $375 million to the project, while the AFL will set aside $15 million. “My government have been engaging with the Tasmanian Government about urban redevelopment on the site of Macquarie Point. That shouldn't come as any surprise. In 2012, myself as Infrastructure Minister put $50 million into that site for its remediation,” he said.

Mr Albanese brushed off those concerns on Wednesday, saying the Commonwealth had been “working through those issues” with state officials and that the site would be more than just a football stadium.
