Podiatrists are warning Australians about the increased risk of toenail fungal infections during the hot summer months. They advise taking preventative measures such as avoiding shared nail clippers and footwear.

Podiatrists are encouraging people to be conscious of the risk of picking up toenail fungal infections this summer. The Australian Podiatry Association says there are steps people can take to avoid fungal infection, including never sharing nail clippers or footwear with others.Podiatrists say hot weather over summer can provide a perfect environment for foot fungal infections to flourish and they are warning Australians to get on top of their foot fungus before it gets out of control.

Tracey Meyer is a podiatrist with Irymple Foot Clinic near Mildura, who has more than 30 years' experience.'A lot of people are really embarrassed about it, but they shouldn't be,' Dr Meyer said.Fungal toenail infections are caused when tinea spores get under toenails and occasionally fingernails. 'Infections can be particularly difficult to get rid of, especially when they progress and get into the root of the nail,' Dr Meyer said. 'So if you're starting to get a bit of discolouration, if it's white or yellow or crumbly, the quicker you get onto it the better because as soon as it gets into the root of the nail, a lot of the pharmacy treatments will be completely ineffective.'Ron from Beechworth called in to the ABC Victoria Statewide Mornings radio program to share his experience of success using a common vaporising ointment for his nail concern. 'I started to put it on after my shower and the next day it looked a bit better and probably within three days my toenails were back to normal,' he said. But podiatrists recommend being wary of home remedies like applying cough medicines and tea tree, clove or linseed oil. 'Tea tree oil does have a slight antifungal effect, however in 30 years of practice, I've only ever had one client who has been successful with that treatment,' Dr Meyer sai
