PLNU's 5-2 win over Azusa Pacific — aided by reversed call in fifth inning — clinches Super Regionals victory
Point Loma Nazarene is headed to the NCAA Division II championship series for the first time in school history.The clinching game turned Saturday afternoon in the fifth on an inning-ending call that was reversed after James briefly pleaded his case.
The Sea Lions became the first team in PacWest history to reach the NCAA Division II championship series. Azusa Pacific touched PLNU starting pitcher Dylan Miller for one run in the second inning and another in the fourth for a 2-0 lead. Cougars left-hander David Hays checked PLNU on one hit through three innings before the Sea Lions broke through with back-to-back home runs by Hunter Otjen and Jakob Christian in the fourth inning to make it 2-2.
Three pitches later, Christian singled between third base and shortstop and two runners came home to give the Sea Lions a 4-2 lead.
