The CEO of Polestar says the price gap between EVs and internal combustion engine cars at the upper end of the market is closing fast.
Polestar, the Volvo offshoot established in 2017, has just launched its latest model, the Polestar 4, which doesn’t have any rear window, instead relying on a real-time camera feed into the cabin.
Thomas Ingenlath said on Tuesday the Polestar brand, an offshoot of Volvo established in 2017, was pitching itself further into the upper end of the vehicle market where the price gap was shrinking. “I don’t think now there’s such a big gap left,” he said from Shanghai, where Polestar launched its newest vehicle, a Polestar 4.
Mr Ingenlath said it was deliberately futuristic and designed to attract a new breed of owner. The company isn’t being specific on price, saying the Polestar 4 is likely to be about $US60,000 when it hits the local market next year.Advertisement Mr Ingenlath said the company had overhauled the design process rather than just modifying an existing SUV in its line-up. The first base model Polestar 2 electric vehiclesin March last year and initially sold for $64,900. A more expensive Polestar 3 is due to hit the market early in 2024, just before the Polestar 4.
