The BBC also quoted a separate statement Mr Wolters gave to German TV channel FTL, in which he said he could not "give any concrete information" on the clues behind the operation. Brueckner, a convicted child abuser and drug dealer, is behind bars in Germany for raping a 72-year-old woman in the same area of the Algarve region from where Madeleine McCann disappeared.
The steps were being taken with a view to "a total clarification of the situation", the police said in a statement.German police are assisting the Portuguese authorities, the German prosecutors said, while London's Metropolitan Police said it also had officers on the ground. German prosecutors revealed in June 2020 that they were investigating Brueckner in connection with the case, saying they had "concrete evidence" he killed Madeleine.
