Police hold serious concerns for the wellbeing of a newborn baby and its mother after a passer-by found 'signs of birth' on a riverbank in suburban Sydney.
Police appeal for information after finding evidence of a birth found on banks of Sydney's Cooks River in EarlwoodPolice are searching for a mother and a newborn baby after a placenta and an umbilical cord were found on the banks of the Cooks River in Sydney late on Monday afternoon.Authorities are encouraging the mother and child to present to a hospital.
"Police arrived and spoke to the passer-by and subsequently we've conducted some forensic examinations over the last couple of hours," Detective Chief Superintendent Christine McDonald said at a press conference at the crime scene late on Monday night.She said their immediate concern was for the health and safety of the mother and the child, and urged anyone with information to come forward.
"Whether that birth or delivery of that child occurred at this location, or another location, is yet to be determined." "It is very important, and it is extreme urgency that we find the mother and child as soon as we can. Obviously, we will be contacting hospitals, we ask that she goes to a hospital.
