A 4-year-old boy was critically injured when police say a family member accidentally shot him inside a Philadelphia home Tuesday night.
According to preliminary information from police, the gunshot happened when a family member was handling a gun inside the home.
A police source told FOX 29's Chris O'Connell that it's believed the child's grandmother, who has a permit to carry, fired the gun accidentally. Police believe there were at least three other children inside the house at the time of the shooting. No other injuries were reported by police. "The individual that we have in custody for this accidental shooting is cooperating with police and is family to this 4-year-old boy," Small said. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw took to twitter following the shooting, saying "these tragedies should neve happen."
"While out department continues to investigate the circumstances of what initially appears to be a tragic accident, we pray that this boy - and all victims of gun trauma - make full recoveries,," Outlaw said.
