A police station in Newman, Australia, has adopted a rescue kitten named PC Bandit who has become a local online sensation. PC Bandit helps officers connect with the public and provides a sense of comfort to those seeking information.
But in the remote West Australia n town of Newman , another cat with attitude is helping those laying down the law, becoming something of a local online celebrity. The station, located about 1,170 kilometres north-east of Perth, adopted PC Bandit as a rescue kitten in 2020. He has since settled in well in his role as a companion animal, even winning over the likes of Sergeant Simon Rimmer.'I come to you as a dog person, but he's grown on me,' Sergeant Rimmer said.
PC Bandit is often found sleeping or lounging on officers' desks, but he's also happy enough to entertain himself. 'From time to time he does have these small periods of absence from the workplace, but he doesn't have to put in any applications for leave … he just does his own thing,' Sergeant Rimmer said.'We use him as a bit of a portal when we're looking for information from the public,' Sergeant Rimmer said. 'People are a little bit more comfortable speaking through that, through our Facebook account and speaking to PC Bandit. 'They don't need to identify with a particular officer here at the police station, it's just PC Bandit and they're happy to do that.''We will find him either on your lap or on your keyboard, and you either have to move him along or try and find out what he wants, and then he's quite happy to sort of keep himself entertained,' Sergeant Rimmer said
