Police chase stolen tractor-trailer through North County neighborhoods [Breaking]
Carlsbad police arrested a man in Vista early Saturday morning about 45 minutes after he led them on a 15-mile chase in a stolen semi tractor-trailer truck through the streets of three different North County cities.
The pursuit started when an automatic license plate scanner detected a vehicle reported stolen about 11 p.m. Friday just south Palomar Airport Road on Paseo Del Norte, which parallels the east side of Interstate 5, Carlsbad police Lt. Ryan Opeka said Saturday morning. When officers approached, the vehicle’s driver got out and ran across the freeway, entering a property on Avenida Encinas near Palomar Airport Road, Opeka said. The driver then stole a truck, but police did not specify from which property. The largest facility with industrial equipment in the area is a large wastewater plant operated by Encina Wastewater Authority.
The truck was not a typical semi tractor-trailer, the lieutenant said, but rather a “trailer jockey” designed to transport trailers short distances in shipping yards but not intended for travel on city streets. A trailer was attached to the vehicle when it was taken, but information on its contents was not available. After bursting through a gate on the property, the driver led police on a chase northward, eventually onto El Camino Real in Carlsbad, according topublished on Twitter.
Radio traffic indicated that roadway spike strips were used to pop the vehicle’s tires, and Opeka said that appeared to be the case, though further details were not available. The truck’s driver was arrested at the scene without incident.
