Gary John Schmidt's remains were discovered on the outskirts of Kununurra in 2015. Genetic genealogy technology has finally allowed authorities to identify him, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain mysterious.
Police have confirmed the body of a man found on the outskirts of Kununurra in 2015 was that of Gary John Schmidt .was discovered along a remote highway in Western Australia's north, police have been able to identify the man using groundbreaking DNA technology.
The remains were reported to police on June 17, 2015 after being located three kilometres east of Cockatoo Springs along the Victoria Highway near Kununurra. Recent advances in investigative genetic genealogy resulted in detectives being able to positively identify Mr Schmidt, but the circumstances surrounding his death remain unknown.The lead investigator of the case at the time, Cameron Blayne, told the ABC that Mr Schmidt was suspected to have had died in late April or early May that year.
So far this year the method has seen police in WA charge people with offences dating back almost 35 years.
