Police in NSW will be given wide-sweeping powers to stop and search people for weapons under new laws proposed by the Minns Government following a series of high-profile stabbing attacks in the state.

Under the new laws, officers would be able to search people in designated areas such as transport hubs, shopping centres and other crowded places. The proposal is modelled around Jack’s Law, which was introduced in Queensland early last year in response to the stabbing death of 17-year old Jack Beasley on the Gold Coast in 2019.
