38-year-old Zachary Gilbaugh survived the shooting and is being held at Berks County Prison on unrelated charges, according to the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office.
The shooting occurred when police from multiple departments went to serve arrest warrants with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force for 38-year-old Zachary Gilbaugh at a home in the 1400 bock of Union Grove Road in East Earl Township on Feb. 1, according to the DA’s office.
Officers were informed Gilbaugh was in the basement and found him “barricaded in a crawlspace-like area.” Officers tried to negotiate with him and used “less lethal” methods to try to bring him out of the crawlspace, including using a taser and ballistic sponge round, which were ineffective. After more than an hour of negotiations, officers retreated out of the basement and house but maintained a perimeter around the building.
Gilbaugh got into the driver’s seat of a tan Chrysler minivan belonging to someone in the house and dropped the saw blade on the ground, according to the DA’s office. Officers provided aid to Guilbaugh before he was taken from the scene for treatment, according to the DA’s office.
