Police log 1m burglaries since 2017 as experts warn cost of living crisis could fuel break-ins ➡️ Officers logged at least 1,002,228 residential burglaries between April 2017 and March 2022
Security experts have warned the cost of living crisis could trigger a rise inas police recorded data reveals more than a million UK homes have been broken into since 2017.
City of London Police, which covers the square-mile sized district, recorded just 67 household burglaries during those five financial years, according to figures obtained under Freedom of Information laws. At least 640,933 of police-recorded burglary investigations were completed with no suspect identified, according to FoI data
At least 45,619 cases resulted in “evidential difficulties named suspect identified” – this means the crime is confirmed and the victim supports police action but difficulties with evidence prevented further action; this includes cases where the “suspect has been circulated as wanted but cannot be traced and the crime is finalised pending further action”.
Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary Andy Cooke said: “Burglary, robbery and theft are not minor crimes. They are crimes that strike at the heart of how safe people feel in their own homes or communities. “In some areas, police forces ensure that a police officer visits every burglary victim, but how and where this happens is a bit of a postcode lottery.”
