Northamptonshire Police are searching for the 'good samaritan' who ran to the assistance of a man who had been knocked unconscious during a mugging in Northampton. Officers say they want to talk to him "as a matter of urgency".

The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 28, in Sheep Street in Northampton town centre. Between 2pm and 3pm, a man in his 40s got off a bus at North Gate Bus Station and walked down the street in the direction of Regent Square. As he approached the church, he was assaulted from behind and knocked unconscious. When the man came to, an as-yet unknown man stopped to help him.The friendly stranger took him to the chemist and then home. Later in the evening, the man sought medical assistance for his injuries and reported he had been robbed of cash.

A police spokesperson said: "Officers would now like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed this incident, and in particular, the male who stopped to help the man. He is asked to contact them as a matter of urgency." Anyone with information is asked to call Northamptonshire Police on 101 or alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
