More than 1000 domestic violence offenders in south-west Sydney have received a visit from police this Christmas season
as part of a targeted operation to prevent family violence at one of the most high-risk times of the year.
Bankstown area commander Superintendent Murray Reynolds said the reception police received from offenders was "varied"."Who wants the police knocking on their door at night to ensure they are not committing violent offences in a domestic relationship. It's not comfortable, but something we have a strong resolve for doing."
"Victims seek comfort in the fact we don't forget about them. We do this three times a year ... around Easter, Christmas and at grand final time during the football season." The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research has revealed that the number of domestic assaults recorded by police at any time during the year is on new year's day, while almost 20 per cent of Australian women aged 18 years and over have experienced violence by a partner since the age of 15 years.
