Streets are in lockdown as police attempt to negotiate with a man locked inside a home north of Brisbane in Queensland.

Police were called to Peter Street in Strathpine shortly after 1.30am on Tuesday over reports of a disturbance.

"Upon arrival, police began negotiations with a man, who is in the residence alone," Queensland Police said in a statement. After hours of mediation, authorities declared an emergency situation under the Public Safety Preservation Act about 4am. An exclusion zone has been established to encompass Gertrude Street, Peter Street, Rowland Street and Cavendish Street.

"Members of the public are advised to avoid the area and those within the exclusion zone are asked to remain indoors until further notice," police continued.Police have said there is no further information at this time, as they work to soothe the flaring situation.
