Police have issued an urgent warning after “significant” sums of money were lost to fraudsters pretending to be doctors. The scammers are particularly targeting Mandarin-speaking Victorians by using artificial intelligence to pretend to be doctors, general practitioners or surgeons, according to police.

They use the titles as a source of credibility before urging victims to purchase gift cards and provide the gift cards code to them via text message. The caller then uses the details of the gift card to obtain the money. The tactic was first reported to Victoria Police in September, with 10 more reports being made since.

“Two recent reports saw one victim suffer a financial loss of $50,000 and another for $40,000,” police said. “The Cybercrime Squad urge the Mandarin-speaking community to remain vigilant and to make a report if they have fallen victim to this scam,” police said. The Mandarin-speaking community has been urged “not continue any conversations that you suspect are scams ... never provide gift card codes or financial information over the phone.

” “Do not reveal any personal information such as your address, bank accounts or other contact details,” police said. Man hit and killed by carThe 30-year-old man was hit by a blue Volkswagen Gold at the intersection of Beaudesert and Paradise Rds about 6.15pm on Wednesday. The Volkswagen’s driver, a 50-year-old man, is assisting police inquiries.
