Two inner city suburbs are adjacent, but data obtained under freedom of information laws reveals how police response times vary widely across Greater Sydney.

Victims of crime in Redfern wait on average more than twice as long for police to respond to an urgent triple zero call as those in nearby Surry Hills.

Surry Hills police officers took an average of four minutes and 34 seconds to respond to urgent calls reporting serious incidents. The difference was greater again between victims of crime in the inner city and those in Sydney's west and north-west. NSW Police Minister David Elliott said victims of crime in Blacktown should not have to wait longer than others in Bondi.Guaranteeing that those officers would go to the areas with slower response times was "a matter for the police commissioner," Mr Elliott said.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said response times were calculated through the Computer Aided Dispatch system, which recorded a 2.3 per cent increase in urgent and immediate response calls since the previous year. The benchmark is 80 per cent, while the official target time was increased from 10 minutes to 12 minutes in 2010, which NSW Police are yet to reach.
