Police allege 17-year-old has failed to comply with bail conditions and his location is unknown
Police search for teenager bailed over alleged crash that killed 28-year-old in MelbourneAustralian Associated PressPolice are searching for a teenager who was charged and bailed after an alleged crash that killed a 28-year-old man.
Victoria police on Tuesday afternoon alleged the 17-year-old failed to comply with his bail conditions and his whereabouts were unknown. The teenager faced a children’s court on Friday after being charged with culpable driving causing death and was released on bail after a judge found the case against him was weak.
Police allege he was behind the wheel of a stolen Jeep that was speeding in the inner-Melbourne suburb of Burwood on 2 July and collided with a Toyota. The boy’s lawyer said the 17-year-old had stable accommodation with his mother, was attending a Melbourne private school and was not on bail at the time of the alleged offending. Two 15-year-old girls were charged with car theft and three other males remain wanted over the collision.
The crash reignited political argument about Victorian bail laws, with then-acting premier Ben Carroll denying the courts were going “too soft” on young alleged offenders.
