The 100-strong taskforce will investigate a spate of targeted shootings after a man was fatally gunned down outside his Canterbury home this morning.

A 100-strong police taskforce will be deployed to combat the escalating gang war for control of Sydney’s drug trade after a man was fatally gunned down on Thursday – the fifth person shot in five days.

The new taskforce will scrutinise the connections between a series of shootings over the last month, which were often coupled with scorched getaway cars, Police Commissioner Karen Webb said. “When investigating these crimes, we hit a wall of silence,” Hudson said. “We’ve had victims who have survived their attacks who refuse to speak to us, refuse to tell us why they were a target of some other group ... that is of the biggest concern to us.Webb said it was a sad indictment the streets of Sydney had seen so much gun violence, and said the drug trade was at the centre of the killings.

Canterbury resident Tony Simms, who has lived on Broughton Street for five years, said he was shocked that Sydney’s recent string of attacks had come to his backyard. Thursday’s shooting comes less than a day after Abbas was shot outside his home in Greenacre in broad daylight, in the same street where notorious gangland figure Mahmoud “Brownie” Ahmad was executed in an unrelated incident a year ago.
