New South Wales Police has announced it will exercise special searching powers on individuals who attend the upcoming pro-Palestine rally in Sydney’s Hyde Park this weekend.
Although earlier indicating the protest looked unlikely to be approved in time given its required paperwork was submitted outside its seven-day mandate, the state’s police force has declared it will still have a heavy presence in the CBD to avoid a recurrence of the violent scenes which unfolded during demonstrations outside the Opera House last Monday.

Picture: John Grainger “I can indicate that the powers we are considering authorising will include any person who attends Hyde Park on Sunday with the intention to assemble and perhaps protest, will be subject to searching powers, where we don’t need reasonable cause to search,” he said.
The NSW Police Force has launched an operation which will aim to prioritise the safety of the community ahead of future protest activity.Police estimate about 300 people are expected to partake in the assembly, marching in support of Palestinian resistance following militant group Hamas’ strikes on southern Israel this week.
