The change could also have implications for teal MPs, elected after spending $10 million to win six seats from the Liberals at the 2022 election.Labor has been expected to bring forward the changes since earlier this year, but without a deal with the Coalition, Senator Farrell has held off releasing the government’s plans.
The Liberals and Nationals are also opposed to donation caps, including different rules for independent candidates and trade unions, labelling such a move as “a financial gerrymander”. However, reforms in time for the 2025 election could be important in helping build trust in Australia’s politicians and political processes.
