Shadow defence minister Andrew Hastie has lambasted Labor over the vetting process for many Palestinian refugees, telling Sky News’ Andrew Clennell his party does not want to see “hurried visas issued out of political expediency”.

Liberal MP Andrew Hastie has flagged concerns over visas for Palestinian refugees being"hurried" out of"political expediency" amid concerns over the vetting process.

“I think this looks quite reflexive from the government, it looks hurried ... The Home Affairs officials which gave evidence at Estimates said that visas were issued within 24 hours,” Mr Hastie told the Sunday Agenda host. “He is under a lot of pressure, and he could have a pro-Gaza independent run against him and so I think this is where this has come from,” the shadow defence minister said before warning of politics influencing the acceptance of visas.Mr Burke, however, defended his party’s track record with Palestinian refugees, presenting a justification for the use of visitor visas with Mr Clennell on Sunday.

Pressed on if he would consider “safe haven visas” or whether “some sort of permanent protection” was more likely, the Minister said his government was not set on specifics yet.
