For those of you who thought misinformation might take a break in 2021, you were in for a shock. Luckily, fact checkers were at the ready to fight it in the second year of the pandemic.
Spurred on by election misinformation and conspiracy theories endorsed by outgoing president Donald Trump, rioters stormed the US Capitol on January 6 in a blatant attack on democracy.
Despite the best efforts of fact checkers, incorrect claims about supposed election "fraud" during the 2020 presidential contest proliferated across social media, culminating in the deadly stampede. The misinformation hangover from 2020 was not solely election-related: the "infodemic" born out of the COVID-19 pandemic failed to dissipate, while the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow brought plenty of dubious environmental claims.Claims that Melbourne is the world's most locked-down city are not clear cut.
