A majority of Americans now support requiring public school students aged 12 or older to be vaccinated against Covid-19 before they can attend classes in person, according to a POLITICO-Harvard survey

The findings come as pediatric cases of Covid-19 are surging across the country and local leaders debate whether to mandate shots for students. | Michael Loccisano/Getty ImagesA majority of Americans now support requiring public school students aged 12 or older to be vaccinated against Covid-19 before they can attend classes in person, according toNearly three in four Democrats favor a vaccine mandate for the students while 59 percent of Republicans are opposed.

“It’s an established principle that schools are able to mandate childhood vaccines. The question is whether Covid is different,” said Robert Blendon, a professor of health policy and political analysis at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, who designed the poll. “Since decisions are being made geographically, Republican counties and states will be very reluctant to add Covid-19 to what children have to receive.

Covid-19 vaccines have not yet been approved for children under 12 years old. On Thursday, Pfizer and BioNTech asked the FDAvote on Oct. 26 on whether to recommend the shot for kids in that age group. A final decision by the FDA is expected soon after. Support for vaccine mandates also was higher in communities of color than among white people, at 63 percent among Black people, 59 percent among Hispanics and 51 percent among white people.
