Rayner deploys historical parallel as she takes aim at rising mortgage rates
Mr Dowden grumpily replies that she clearly wasn't listening when he explained the PM is at NATO, with a swipe at Jeremy Corbyn's anti-NATO, anti-army position. He's stronger hitting back on home ownership - saying he won't take any lectures on house building from Labour, and claiming his own parents were only able to buy their own home thanks to Margaret Thatcher.
Oliver Dowden responds by saying:"I know there is a reshuffle coming up on the other side but this audition for John Prescott's old job is getting just a little bit hackneyed." "The truth is, rising bills and soaring mortgages and plummeting real wages are pushing more and more families to the brink.
"I'm very proud to be filling the boots of Lord John Prescott," she quips, before adding"he's no Heseltine", in reference to John Major's former deputy, Michael, now Lord Heseltine. "That means investing in the North Sea," he says, warning that if we don't there will be higher carbon emissions"as we import from elsewhere".
The former prime minister's staunch ally claims to have uncovered a"fault line" within the Conservative Party through conversations with cabinet ministers, civil servants and party officials which form the basis of her account.It is set to hit the stands on 28 September - just three days before Conservatives convene for the annual party conference on 1 October.
Mr Case added:"Obviously I don't agree with a characterisation which is insulting, dehumanising, totally unacceptable.
