A major new opinion poll shows Australians have warmed slightly to China over the past year, while a majority are glad to see high-level political contact between Canberra and Beijing resume.

And that seems to have driven a slight improvement in Australian attitudes towards China, with 56 per cent of those polled telling the Lowy Institute the diplomatic thaw was positive for Australia's national interests. The Lowy Institute's Ryan Neelum, who authored the poll, said Australia's perceptions towards China had "levelled off" after a "steep" decline.
"Around this time Australians also watched China's reaction to the COVID pandemic, the clamp down on the pro-democracy movement in Hong Kong, there were well publicised allegations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang and of course there has been a lot of publicity about the military build-up in the region," he said.Only 42 per cent of respondents supported sending Australian troops to defend Taiwan from China.
And when asked whether Australia should remain "neutral" in a military conflict between the US and China, 56 per cent of Australians said yes – a five-point increase from 2022.Attitudes towards the United States remained largely steady, with 82 per cent of those polled saying the US alliance remained important to Australia's security.
