Police and poll workers have been told to expect tension as people without ID will be left without a vote on 4 May

Voters in England should check they have an accepted form of photographic identification if they plan to vote in person during next month’s local elections Polling staff have been warned to brace themselves for disturbances in the upcomingon 4 May, as voters will be required to show ID to cast the ballot for the first time.

Local councils and Government officials are thought to have raised concerns with police about disruption provoked by controversial voter ID laws. Professional training to diffuse conflicts and talks with the police are understood to have been held in a bid to prepare staff. “You’d hope those who get turned away are not going to take it out on the staff. But ultimately, it will come down to an almost case by case basis. It’s almost impossible to control.”
