Brackenridge Park low-water crossing a splashy rite of passage

In this 2017 photo, a family traverses the popular low-water crossing at Brackenridge Park as campers stake a spot to celebrate Easter weekend with family and friends. The crossing is no longer open to vehicular traffic. As for the last time automobiles rolled through those waters, it appears to be March 2021 for “A Promenade Through the Park,” a one-night fundraiser for the Brackenridge Park Conservancy that included a socially-distanced drive through the park with rare access to the crossing.

“People would like it open, to be able to drive through it,” she said. “Since it was part of the way the park was laid out, there does have to be discussion if it’s going to be closed permanently. Because it was of the historic period.” “It’s everybody’s favorite memory,” Fisher said. “The trip to the park wasn’t complete without a drive through the low-water crossing.”

“You’re not just looking at ,” he said. “You actually interact with it. You can hear it. You can feel the spray.”
