More than 600 acres of new open space would expand Sweetwater Regional Park and Mount Olympus County Preserve

San Diego County plans to add hundreds of acres of natural space to its regional conservation system and expand a South County regional park with the approval of two land purchases this week.

Supervisors voted unanimously to buy 425 acres to expand Mount Olympus County Preserve in the Pala area and another 190 acres for Sweetwater Regional Park in Spring Valley. The acquisitions will increase open space and habitat in the county’s Multi Species Conservation Program, officials said. The Sweetwater property would expand the regional park from 300 to 490 acres, providing new opportunities for hiking, biking and nature-watching. It would help complete the Sweetwater Loop Trail, an 11-mile trail around the Sweetwater Reservoir, and would add coastal sage scrub habitat for species such as the endangered least Bell’s vireo. The county has an option agreement with the New Ranch Land Company to buy the land for its appraised value of about $5.

The Pala property, located next to the Mount Olympus Preserve and within the North County conservation plan area, would expand the preserve from 800 to more than 1,200 acres. It would conserve large expanses of chaparral that could host species including mule deer and mountain lions, as well as wetland and streamside habitat, the board letter said.
