It's a decision that contradicts executive director of the Australia Institute, Dr Richard Denniss, who sees housing as the "great wealth generator in Australia". She feared a nonprofit organisation may manage with a mentality of a business, and create instability for its renters. And after it, Jeannie says a clear "divide" was created between the building's private renters and its social housing tenants."It was just heartbreaking because it's not just the bricks and the concrete, it was your home," Jeannie says of the Prahran building."When I found out that Margaret was taking a stand that she wasn't going to move, that's when I got behind her.
The ABC understands Homes Victoria believed retaining the existing buildings would have meant significant technical challenges and costs to meet modern codes.She said after the OFFICE proposal, she began to refuse to answer the government's questions asking where she would like to move."I've got a very stubborn nature," Margaret adds."I think that's my job as a citizen in a democracy and it was very clear to me that what they were doing was wrong.
