South Oak Cliff stopped Port Neches-Groves one win short of a state title.

Port Neches-Groves emerges from the tunnel to face Dallas South Oak Cliff in the 5A-II state championship at AT&T Stadium. Photo made Friday, December 16, 2022 Kim Brent/Beaumont EnterpriseEverything was going according to plan for Port Neches-Groves High School through the first 24 minutes of the Class 5A-II state title game.

South Oak Cliff stormed back, flipping the script to win its second-straight state title, 34-24, over Port Neches-Groves inside AT&T Stadium in Arlington. A disastrous third quarter saw South Oak Cliff outscore Port Neches-Groves 19-0, including a safety and a pick-six by the Golden Bears defense. Port Neches-Groves' biggest lead of the game came with 3:32 remaining in the first half after a short touchdown run by Shea Adams. The score put PN-G on top, 17-5, with the possibility of taking a double-digit lead into halftime.

"We had them in 3rd-and-18, they converted and scored, and I think that was a real momentum swing in the football game," Joseph said.
