The city of Portage’s sanitation department could have a green fleet complete by 2028.
The department is getting seven new CNG-powered trucks through grants from the Volkswagen litigation settlement fund, Superintendent Randy Reeder said. Five have already been delivered.
“This is one of the cleanest, most reliable fuels that is available for heavy-duty trucks,” said Drive Clean Indiana’s execiutive director, Carl Lisek. Reeder put CNG in perspective for the council. CNG has one-seventh the carbon output of diesel, he said.Lynch said partnering with Drive Clean Indiana, the Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission and other partners is important. “It’s vitally important that we keep connecting with partners because it brings things into the city,” she said.
