Julia Gutman has won the 2023 Archibald Prize for her painting of friend and fellow artist, Australian singer Montaigne. The $100,000 prize marks Gutman as the 11th woman to take out the distinguished prize in its 102-year history. MORE: 9News

"I was really honoured to be chosen as a finalist let alone win this," she said at the ceremony at the Art Gallery of NSW.The Sulman Prize was awarded to Doris Bush Nungarrayi for her workNungarrayi is from Papunya north of Alice Springs, and gave an acceptance speech in her language.Fielding sang his acceptance speech.Click through to see the other nominees for the Archibald Prize for this year.
The painting by Cairns-based artist Andrea Huelin is one of 57 finalists for the biggest art award in Australia. The Packing Room Prize, which comes with $3000 cash, is awarded by the Art Gallery of NSW staff who receive, unpack and hang the entries.
