? They are all archetypes of the clothing and jewellery world, and symbols within the Prada universe, which the Italian label has chosen to reinterpret, challenge and subvert.
The heart, the chain, the snake: all motifs central to Eternal Gold, Prada’s first collection of fine jewellery – a near 50-piece genderless offering – that, according to Prada jewellery director Timothy Iwata, aims to give “contemporary meaning and relevance to classic shapes.” Like the Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra or the Cartier Juste Un Clou, a graphic icon has also been incorporated into the lexicon of fine jewellery: the Prada triangle. The shape represents the conceptual, wordless essence of the 1913-founded label, originally used as a symbol of luxury by the Milanese house’s founder, Mario Prada.The collection – made up of pieces available to buy immediately and through pre-order or made-to-order – places focus on surprising patinas, finishes or proportions.
The heart pendant has voluptuous curves and a sharp point, a nod to the oft-jarring arcs of romance. “Everybody sells love and clichés,” says Iwata. “We wanted to celebrate the difficulties faced, in exaggerated form.” The coiled serpent cuff appears to have shed its skin, fantastically smooth, with invisible mechanisms. “When snakes shed their skin they are shiny and bright. That’s our symbol of the essence of transformation,” he explains.
