Prawn trawlers are being left at the ports as farmers struggle to fuel and staff boats amid what some say is the most dire season ever.
Prawn trawler operator Ed Morrison believes farming comes in peaks and troughs, but this year it's hurting more than usual.Prawn fisherman are opting to keep trawlers in port instead of fishing for the entire seasonThe North Queensland-based businessman runs prawn trawlers in the Torres Strait. His prawns are sold throughout Australia but he says this year has been one of the worst seasons he has seen.
"Usually we send them out for the whole month but now we're looking at sending them out only for 14 or 16 days and pull them in because of the cost of fuel.It impacts staff who are paid a percentage of the catch, Mr Morrison said. "But our crew are paid a percentage of what we catch. And if we're not catching as much because we're keeping the boats in, their wages are being impacted."
