The Brisbane Lions AFL club has previously talked favourably about a proposal to play home games at the 20,000-seat Brisbane Showgrounds during the Gabba reconstruction.
, the Royal National Agricultural and Industrial Association of Queensland has proposed the main arena, or exhibition ground, at the Brisbane Showgrounds.
“We also have regional AFL grounds, and we also have Carrara down on the Gold Coast ... they have had no discussion with me, the Brisbane Lions, about that [playing at the showgrounds]. In fact, they were talking to me yesterday about how great the Springfield campus is.” More than 30,000 spectators were at the Gabba on Sunday for the Lions’ round 21 game against Carlton. Palaszczuk did not elaborate about which regional grounds she believed could accommodate AFL games.
