Everton thought they were awarded a penalty in their Premier League opener with Brighton & Hove Albion at Goodison Park
Everton had a penalty overturned in the crucial opening minutes of the second half against Brighton & Hove Albion. Referee Simon Hooper pointed to the spot when Dominic Calvert-Lewin appeared to be brought down by Lewis Dunk in the visitors’ box. The decision sparked hope in the crowd that the endeavour shown by Everton in the first half could bring an end product and a leveller heading into the final 30 minutes, with Kaoru Mitoma having given Brighton the lead in the first half.
After a short period of reflection he ruled out the penalty. Explaining the call, the Premier League Match Centre said: “The referee awarded a penalty to Everton for a foul by Dunk on Calvert-Lewin. The VAR recommended an on-field review as he deemed Calvert-Lewin’s foot landed on Dunk’s foot and there was no foul. The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a drop ball.
