Treasurer Jim Chalmers is facing growing calls for the Albanese government to pay unemployed Australians more money while they look for a job.

Pressure is mounting on Jim Chalmers to"substantially" boost JobSeeker payments, with a committee chaired by a former Labor minister arguing the current rate is"too low".

The recommended cash boost formed part of the committee's annual report to government ahead of the federal budget, which this year will be released on May 14. Under that scenario, the JobSeeker rate for a single person with no dependents would go from the current figure of about $54 a day to about $72. must deliver the top rec of the Economic Inclusion Advisory Committee & substantially increase these payments so people can cover the basics. The committee further argued that increasing JobSeeker would likely not result in a significant number of unemployed people being incentivised to not move off benefits.

Australian Council of Social Service CEO Cassandra Goldie, who also sits on the committee, said an increase was essential"so that people can live with dignity".
